Last week in Greenville, South Carolina a bookstore hosted a Silent Reading Party. Although this is my kind of party, it was too far of a drive for me to attend, so I recreated the party at home. And it was delightful! I definitely recommend finding time this fall to create your own reading party at home!

Duet
Meet Mirabelle, a young goldfinch who loves to sing and dreams of becoming a musical star.
Meet Michael, an eleven-year-old piano sensation.
This is a sweet story by Elise Broach about an unlikely duet between Michael and Mirabelle, with a little mystery about the great composer Frederic Chopin sprinkled throughout the story.

Nothing Else But Miracles
The newest book from Kate Albus (author of A Place to Hang the Moon) is possibly one of my favorite books of 2023! Dory’s dad is off fighting in World War II when her and her brothers discover an abandoned hotel in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The hotel just might be the perfect hideout when they need it the most.

Out of Range
Three feuding sisters find themselves lost in the wilderness and they have to learn to get along if they want to survive. A compelling survival story from Heidi Lang.

Now, if your 8-12 reader is looking for something spooky or with ghosts to read this month, here are a few suggestions:
Field Guide to the Supernatural Universe
Think Stranger Things meets Sideways Stories from Wayside School! In this book from Alyson Noël, Max can see ghosts and it has made his life challenging, so he gets sent to spend the summer with his grandfather. But things don’t go as expected!

The Girl in White
Lindsay Currie does middle grades spooky books really well, and this is no exception! Mallory is having a difficult time adjusting to her new town and now she’s having nightmares. She doesn’t believe the ghost stories she’s heard but things aren’t adding up and now she’s forced to investigate one of the legends in town.

The Polter-Ghost Problem
Three best friends discover a haunted orphanage and when they discover two types of ghosts, the trouble begins! Betsy Uhrig writes a story that is both laugh out loud funny and just a touch spooky. The characters in this book are definitely in middle school so the humor is aimed more towards the older middle grade reader (think 10 and up).
