South Carolina Children's Book Award
South Carolina Association of School Libraries Book Award Nominations
This past year I had the privilege of being a member of the South Carolina Children’s Book Award Committee. Last week they revealed our Book Award Nominations list (you can see the whole list here) so I wanted to share a few of my favorites from the list.
*NOTE: These are not the only good books on the list! These are just the ones that really stole my heart.

The Girl in White
Lindsay Currie does middle grades spooky books really well, and this is no exception! Mallory is having a difficult time adjusting to her new town and now she’s having nightmares. She doesn’t believe the ghost stories she’s heard but things aren’t adding up and now she’s forced to investigate one of the legends in town.

Honestly Elliott
Baking. A new baby brother or sister. Best friend moved away. ADHD.
Elliott has a lot going on since he started middle school and now he also has to juggle a partner project at school. Elliott is a perfectly imperfect main character and this is just a fun and engaging middle grade read.

Wildoak
An absolutely beautiful story that feels like reading a classic. Step back in time to the English countryside and meet Maggie, an exotic snow leopard, and an ancient forest. Maggie has been sent to live with her grandfather as a last ditch effort to “fix” her stuttering. There she fights to save a snow leopard and a forest. One of my favorite quotes from the book, "Everybody has something about themselves they want to change, Maggie. Whether it's the way they look, the way they sound, where they're from, what they own or what they don't own. Some of us feel it more than others. But the truth is, and I believe this with all my heart, there's room in this beautiful, complicated world of ours for all of us. Just as we are. In fact, there is a need for it."
